ILM Emotional Intelligence for Leaders Gone are the days when a leader, manager or being part of a team means that you could be rational and logical about your responsibilities. Being rational and logical seems to only take you so far.

What we are saying is that the ‘Emotionally Intelligent Leader’ or manager can combine passion with logic and emotions with intelligence so that they can:

Emotional Intelligence is already regarded by many as a key skill that all leaders should possess. “Emotional intelligence is the master aptitude, a capacity that profoundly affects all other abilities, either facilitating them or interfering with them” – Daniel Goleman (author of the best seller ‘Emotional Intelligence – Why it can matter more than IQ’.

The aims of the ILM Emotional Intelligence (EI) Programme for Leaders.

To provide an understanding of the principles and approaches of emotional intelligence and how to apply them in leadership and the workplace using experiential methods of training in its techniques and continual practical assessment. The programme will provide a thorough understanding of what emotional intelligence is, and how to use self-awareness more effectively to enhance your relationships and conversations with others.

Understanding Good Practice in Workplace emotional intelligence

EI provides an in-depth understanding of people’s interaction within the workplace and brings out the best in teams. Using a range of tools you will explore the impact of emotions within the company.

Apart from understanding the difference between personality test and the critical different of Emotional Intelligence you will:

  • Examine self-destructive behaviors and how to deal with themLearn the ‘ABCDE’ theory of emotions (The ‘Rational Emotive Behaviour Therapy’ – theory developed in the 1950s by the psychologist Dr Albert Ellis)
  • Learn to use our exclusive simple EI Test
  • How to approach difficult people

Understanding how we can use ‘fear’.

Researcher Ed Salas notes “communication acts as the glue, which links together all other teamwork processes. When the glue isn’t strong enough, teams fall apart.” Salas goes on to say that communication related problems of a team are one of the top reasons for project failures.

When we use emotions correctly we can improve this communication. For example lets take fear.

Fear is a ‘here and now’ emotion that can be used in both a negative way and a positive way with teams

Vision of fear:

Fear is a terrific motivator, a lifesaver (literally). Threatening the end of the world if employees don’t wake up and smell the coffee, will in the short term cause people to work harder, but does not work all that well in the long run. Fear burns us out and is not forward looking, its here and now.

Emotionally Intelligent use of Fear

Fear will focus all parties on potential threats, it gets everyone’s attention. Once you have someone’s attention it is time to refocus attention and direct their adrenaline towards an objective – this is where your vision comes in.

Emotions have rules. You can learn these rules and use this knowledge to help you better figure people out. Understanding the way in which emotions change and transition, as well as the underlying causes of emotions, give you the ability to gaze into the future and to predict it with some degree of certainty. This helps you strategise and plan better.
